backpacks are back

Backpacks have slowly been coming back on the radar. Heretofore it's been small leather napsacks or the square Swedish kånken mini-backpacks. all very stylized and working with a "look."

And then i see these shots today of the Twilight mega-stars Robert Pattinson (above) and Kristen Stewart (below) walking through Vancouver Airport. And they are BOTH carrying these full-size black SPORTY backpacks. And they look very cool!

Yes, indeed. backpacks are back. full-on.

love the hat

Michelle Williams has amazing style. She is one of my style "icons" lately. And I just happened upon this recent picture of her in the rain. Her whole outfit is amazing but it's the hat that is spot-on. Ribbed and slouchy but not too loose. The trend for the past couple seasons has leaned toward a super slouchy, falling-off-the-head, overdone look that is very teen. This hat worn by Michelle is more adult and modern because of its tighter fit. But because of the fabrication and the ever so slight over-sized fit (how it covers the ears), it is still a little grunge (think Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis circa '93). It's very refreshing but still simple.

the universal tri-blend

Normally I prefer 100% cotton when it comes to t-shirts. However the tri-blend from American Apparel - a blend of cotton, polyester and rayon - has the best drape of any t-shirt I've ever worn. The unisex tank is super nice, so are the summer v-necks and the racerback tank (although it is very low).

The colors are all heather. The grey is BY-FAR the best. I think I have four or five versions in the heather grey. The tri-black is great too and so are some of the pop colors as well (indigo, evergreen, coffee).

It works as a great layering piece with any outfit - or more like a great base from which to build upon. And it has such a nice, simple feel to it that it can stand alone as well, making a look complete.

lycklig lykke li

The Lykke Li album Youth Novels is one of my favorites. Not only because she's Swedish and clearly very cool (here seen posing in Acne as part of her new spokesperson status for them) but also because her music makes her sound way older than her 23 years.

She has just written a song for the New Moon soundtrack. It is UNREAL. Such a great song. I am reeling over it. And just discovered that when she'd been asked to write the song for the movie, she was actually pretty unsure about being part of something so big-budget-Hollywood. Then she saw a pre-screening of the movie and fell so in love with the story that she became COMPELLED to write it. Yeah, the song is that good.

Another reason she's cool - her name is sort of a play-on-words in Swedish. Lycklig means happy.

the ones that got away

i dream about these boots all the time. except in a light tan color. they are from APC FW07/08. suede boat shoes in an ankle boot version lined in shearling. to this day i cannot remember why i didn't buy them. they are so simple yet so awesome.

my first persimmon post

so after several months of thought, i am starting a blog.

it is called simply: persimmon. named after the color of my favorite scarf.

on this blog i will post things that catch my "eye" - so to speak. and by my eye, i mean things that have a great look, feel and total style about them. these items will probably be from fashion - apparel, accessories and (definitely) shoes. but they could also be furniture, a room, someone's house, a nice toaster, a great song, anything. it just has to have the right edge. so - here we go.
